Simon Cowell Defends Choosing Nick Grimshaw For X Factor
Simon Cowell has defend choosing Nick Grimshaw as an X Factor judge.
Simon came under fire when news broke that the BBC Radio 1 presenter would be joining the panel alongside himself, Rita Ora and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini.
Fans were unhappy with the announcement, claiming the newbie didn't have the relevant experience in the music industry.
But Simon has now explained the reasoning behind his decision: "When I first appeared on TV, nobody knew who I was. I just ran a record label.
"I actually never even got paid the first time I did Pop Idol. But I thought: God, this is amazing, I can sit on a show and find artists. It's fantastic."
According to Simon, it was important to him not to have too many pop stars on the judging panel.
He said: "I have an issue with artists judging other artists. I would never allow a group of artists to run the record label. That would be crazy. You have to balance it up a bit."
Talking to The Mirror newspaper, Simon also explained that he wanted to "change things up a bit" this year to keep the show fresh and exciting.
Simon wants those factors to bring more attention to the contestants rather than the judges.
"We have to focus on the contestants," he stressed. "I've got some ideas and I'm excited about what's coming up!"
X Factor auditions start in Manchester on Monday, continuing in London the following week.
